Just A Butterfly On My Hand

If you advance confidently in the direction of your own dreams and endeavor to live the life which you have imagined, you will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. It will chase you.”

…Henry David Thoreau

Yesterday was a world-class day.

Have you ever witnessed or experienced something that was so profoundly beautiful that it brought tears to your eyes?

This is the highest octave of any day’s energetics.

Beauty has many forms and definitions.  It applies to anything and everything.

I write almost every day and I do not have words to describe what happened to me yesterday.  It is one of those days when I wish I was an artist of some kind because words fail me when attempting to describe what happened.  Playing an instrument, dancing, or using the voice for singing would be the only way to fully engender the meaning.

Thus, I will honor the beauty of the heart of it as purely and as simply as I can: We are greatly loved, and the enormity of it is realized by us only in flickers.

The stars flickered for us yesterday.  And, strangely here is what happened…

As most of you know, I lost one of my sisters to breast cancer and the void she left can be all-consuming some days. But, on other days, well, things magical happen. “As above, so below” is an ancient adage that declares a belief in the physical connection between heaven and earth. And, yesterday I experienced a mystical moment.

But, first I must tell you that, for our family, butterflies are very significant. Whenever we see a butterfly we know that my sister is close by. This is because, shortly after her death, her daughter who was seeing a grief counselor, was asked: “If your mommy could come back, what would she come back as?” She responded almost immediately and with great conviction: “Oh, my mommy would be a butterfly.”

And, when at Christmas of the same year, she yanked on her clacker, (that yearly tradition in some Christian households) to get her gift that was inside…and a butterfly popped out, we knew without a doubt that my sister, who had a great sense of humor, was making a visit. So…ever since then….butterflies are significant.

Well, as it happened, yesterday a man came up to me with his hands cupped. He opened them and then gently placed on my finger, the coolest, most beautiful butterfly. A Swallowtail Butterfly to be exact. You rarely see any of them, though, as they spend much of their lives feeding high up in trees, and do so mostly at night.

Not yesterday. Yesterday, this stunning, graceful, elegant, exquisite living being, visited me and stayed on my hand for at least 15 minutes! In the midst of all the craziness and insanity that this world is doling out right now; in the middle of this huge transition that humanity is going through, I actually drew a crowd as people wanted to see up close the beauty of this spectacular butterfly.

And, I got quite emotional as I stood there. For, you see, I knew without a doubt that this was my sister paying us a visit. And, she had the ability to make people pause for a second, from their busy lives, to admire the beauty this world has to offer.

I realized something else too. In the parallel of the cycle of growth of a butterfly, we are in the time of the “growing season” when the caterpillar cocoons and makes its way through the darkness of the chrysalis to come out into the light of day.  In the natural cycle, this is the time of persevering through challenges to our hopes, wishes and dreams.

My sister showed me in her quiet, ethereal, unearthly, kind of way that just as she made the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, we too, are being lifted above and beyond.  Out of harm’s way.

So, advance confidently in the direction of your dreams. If you do, you’ll meet with a success that can only be imagined! It will chase you. My sister chased us yesterday. It was a beautiful act of love.

Exit Wounds

The wound is the place where the light hits you.”

We have all been betrayed. We have all been the betrayer. And, we often look to someone who we can trust more than ourselves. Perhaps this is because we know deep down how often we betray ourselves.

I have learned over the years that the people in my life who are most trustworthy are those people who tell me the truth even when the truth is hard. They are not always the people who keep their agreements with me. How does this make them trustworthy you ask?

Those who can be disloyal and can bear the responsibility of breaking an agreement with someone when the other option is to betray themselves…are trustworthy.

Yes, we have all had wounds. We have all been the betrayed and the betrayer. If we cannot acknowledge this, we will find ourselves harsh and unforgiving. And, especially unable to grieve for the times we have betrayed ourselves.

Now, refusing to betray ourselves does not give us a license to break agreements on a whim, or to disregard the aftermath of our actions on others.

Sometimes, it seems like we must be cruel…we must wound others, in order to be kind in the long run. And that’s the hardest part. The hard part too, the place where we hope that wisdom will find us, is in deciding where and when we must break a promise to be true to ourselves. We must weigh the cost to our soul…if we keep our agreement…the cost of that which is the essence of who we are…against the cost to others if the agreement is broken.

A wound, whether the betrayer or the betrayed…is that place where the choices we make are. But, if we can be still enough with what is…we can find that place deep in our soul where it is clear which choice is a choice for life, and we can make no other. And, that is where the light begins to seep in.

I ask you this. Can you do this? Can you make the choice that’s for life even when that choice is hard? When doing so makes you appear disloyal to others? Can you make the choice without putting yourself or the other out of your heart? This is what I want to know. For I believe, that if we are strong enough to be weak enough, we are given a wound that never heals. It is that wound…that gift that shines the light in and keeps the heart open.

Ending? This Is Only The Beginning.

The limit is not in the sky. The limit is in the mind.”

This past weekend it was my privilege to attend a party. A Retirement Party. Honoring a teacher who spent all of her working career shaping and molding young minds.

And, she would do this not by filling their minds with conditioned thinking, but by challenging these young souls, to dare to dream.

She had a special talent in reaching these youthful spirits who are in the springtime of their lives. How did she get through to them in such a way that years after they left her classroom, they would return to visit her and share their accomplishments, their fears, and even for some, their failures.

Why were they so faithful to her? How did she do this?

I believe that it was because she had a talent…that she was given a gift in this lifetime…and she used it! Her passion to make a difference in the lives of these inexperienced, and, as yet, unworldy persons created a trust and a following that I have not seen EVER!!

She was creative in her teaching methods and taught with humor and a no-nonsense attitude. She tutored children from all walks of life. Rich kids. Poor kids. Genius kids. Average kids. Kids who struggled to learn.

She guided them with a tenderness for the courage of the human heart. A heart that would have to stand up again and again. A heart that would have to expand to hold all that mattered, even when doing so seemed, to their human minds, unbearable or simply impossible. She taught them simply by reminding them what they already knew…that they could do anything in life that they wanted, by having the courage to go deeper. By letting their desire grow larger than their fear. By sharing with them the value of participating fully in their own life.

Yes, Mrs. Nicholson is a very special kind of teacher. One that comes along only once in a while. She has helped to make the changes that are necessary to ensure that our children’s children can live on this planet. She has contributed by helping to create a world where the very idea of toxic waste, for example, will raise such a cry of anguish from the people as to make it unthinkable. That’s what she has given to our young people of today. An awakening. An awareness.

Kelly, my friend. I thank you. For teaching with heart. For guiding our youngsters from the heart. This world is a better place because of you.

Here’s to the new adventures you will now have. And, Happy Retirement. You deserve it!

Please Don’t Eat The Daisies

We should give the common flower the chance to captivate us.”

You know you’re too busy when…there is not enough time in the day to sit in stillness. To give yourself a chance to reclaim your true nature. Not those times when you throw yourself into bed at night in pure exhaustion. But that special kind of silence, like the early morning tranquility before the rest of the world begins to stir in wakefulness.

To listen to the birds chirp their magical songs. And actually hear it. And enjoy it. Not brush it away like background noise. That kind of quiet when you lay on your back in the grass on a warm summer’s day and draw pictures in the sky with the clouds. Or, to inhale the fragrance of tomatoes growing in the garden, recalling the sweetness of biting into one you just plucked off the vine.

Those small, seemingly insignificant times are the verifiable, authentic, honest-to-goodness priceless moments we so casually whisk away.

It’s time. To impact change in every part of this planet. In every nook and cranny. Beginning with yourself.

Your very own life choices will increase as if by magic if you do this:

Those words that you so casually throw out to the people you come in contact with every day are, in fact, very powerful. Every word has power.

So, change your thought and speech patterns!  The time is now to make a difference because every thought you think and every word you say is vibrating out to the world. And, it is affecting every person in this world on some level. For, as you create your words, you create your (and our) destiny.

Once you comprehend that by speaking, thinking, and acting clearly with soaring, high-energy intent…by thinking coherent thoughts in a directed way…your thoughts will beam out like laser magic, and you can achieve great results!  Almost instantaneously!

You see, your sub-conscious mind acts only in the present moment. Even if you’re talking about someone else, your sub-conscious mind thinks you’re talking about yourself, because it only responds to the key words you use. Your very own self-worth may be less than what it could be because your sub-conscious mind accepts all your words as truth!

Let me give you an example. Words or phrases like “That’s not bad” changes to “That’s quite good.” Or, “No problem” changes to “You’re very welcome.” Or, “That’s bad” changes to “That’s not good.” Or, “I’m sick” becomes “I don’t feel well.”

Start switching your key words. Why? Because your inner mind does not process negative commands. “Do NOT think of a big grey hippo.” “Do NOT think of a big grey hippo in a pink tutu dancing on his toes.” What are you trying not to remember?

Your sub-conscious mind cannot process what is NOT. It simply responds to the words you have given it. I hear people all the time saying “No problem” when they really mean “You’re welcome” or, “It’s my pleasure.”

Just think what the sub-conscious mind actually hears. It doesn’t hear “no,” it just hears “problem.” So, switching your language gives you a brilliant solution for stopping non-productive inner self-talk.

When you actively, knowingly, switch on your inner self-talk, you can gain control of your life and your emotions. Your words are gifts that you give and receive. And, you have the ability today to make someone, including yourself, feel much better about life and themselves.

And, to slow down and take the time to inhale the scent of a common flower and give it a chance to let it captivate you.

Taking Off Against The Wind. Then Soaring Above It.

When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

…Henry Ford

Some days it seems like everything is out to get you. Deadlines need to be met. Spouses or partners need time and attention that you don’t have to give them, children are not cooperating with you as you try to get them out of the house and to school on time. You get the picture.

There is only so much one can take before the storm sets in.

Our mind is not unlike a sea or a an ocean. Rain showers, storms, or the sun can transform the surface of any expanse of water into a bubbling, frothing buildup of horrifically high waves, or into a clear, smooth sheet whereby we can see into those great depths below.

The same is true for us. Intense emotions or a grueling mood can crop up when we least expect it. Nor want it. The key is that when these storms crops up (we all know that they will) and we seem to be going against the wind…

Don’t wish these feelings away! Or, wish they were different from what they are in the moment. Instead learn to notice the “weather” inside and root yourself in what is really happening.

This weather report will help us to understand our inside world just a little bit better. This in turn allows us to acknowledge our moods and to help us accept them. That it’s okay to have such feelings.

When we allow ourselves to look at our emotions, we can then determine what is right for us at that moment: a hug, a phone call to a friend, a joint effort to find a solution to a problem, or something completely different.

Chances are that in those times when the wind is against us, and we take the time to notice that “I am not the downpour, but I notice that it is raining; I am not a fearful person, but I realize that sometimes I have these big heebie-jeebies, or butterflies in my stomach,” it trains us to identify less with our moods.

It enables us to face those blistering storms head on. Not without that fear, or that anger, or that sadness, but, rather, in spite of it.

It’s always good to remember too, that whatever we resist, persists. Whatever we fight, we strengthen. And whatever we fear, we draw near. The important thing is to allow ourselves to feel those feelings and then do it anyway. After that…get out there and kick some butt!!!

Here’s an inspirational video to get you taking off against the wind…and loving it!

The Extrovert – Diary of A World That Can’t Stop Talking

Our culture made a virtue of living only as extroverts. We discouraged the inner journey, the quest for a center. So we lost our center and have to find it again.”

…Anais Nin

We’ve all grown up in this western cultural mindset that told us it’s great to be bold, to be sociable (think about Social Media). Extroverts love to get out there and meet new people, crank up the stereo, race to the finish line, tackle assignments quickly. Which means we’ve lost sight of who we really are.

But, did you know that one third to one half of our population are introverts?…in other words, one out of every two or three people you know.

That was astonishing to me! Could I actually be an introvert?!! So I did some research. And here’s a very interesting story that exemplifies how our North American culture evolved into the rise of the Extrovert Ideal…

The date: 1902. The place: Harmony Church, Missouri, a tiny dot-on-the-map, village in small-town U.S.A. Our leading character: a good-natured but insecure teenage boy named Dale.

Skinny, fretful, unathletic, Dale was the son of a morally upright but constantly bankrupt pig farmer. He loves and respects his parents but is horrified that he might end up like them. Dale worries about other things too. Thunder and lightening, having a date for his high school prom, and being tongue-tied at crucial moments.

Well, one day a very captivating speaker comes to town. You know the kind…with the ability to mesmerize an audience. And, he fascinates young Dale with his rag-to-riches story. How he went from a lowly farm boy with a bleak future, to how he developed a charismatic speaking style and took to the stage. Dale hangs on every word he says.

A few years go by and Dale is again impressed by the value of public speaking. He is now in college and he observes that the students who win the campus speaking contests are viewed as leaders, and he is determined to be one of them. He signs up for every contest. He practices every night at home. Again and again he loses.

Eventually though his efforts begin to pay off. He transforms himself into a speaking champion and campus hero. By the time he leaves college, students are seeking him out for help in speaking, and corporate America is booming. J.C. Penney, Sears Roebuck, Woolworth are all household names.

Well, this new economy called for a new kind of man…a salesman, a social operator who had a ready smile, a great handshake. You know the kind. So, Dale joins the ranks of those salesmen, heading out on the road.

Dale’s last name as you may have guessed by now is Carnegie. The rest is history. His book “How To Win Friends and Influence People” was one of the first best-selling, self-help books ever published. His story is also the rise of our cultural evolution that reached a tipping point around the turn of the twentieth century.

So, here’s what happened. We shifted our focus from inner goodness and integrity to outer seductiveness, magnetism, and charm. We went from a Culture of Character, to a Culture of Personality. And, we opened up a Pandora’s box of personal stress and anxiety from which we have not yet recovered.

And, it’s bizarre given the fact that most of us are actually introverts, who have learned how to adopt extroverted behaviors in order to succeed. But, at what a cost!! We have now reached epidemic levels in depression, and mental health issues.

The solution is simple. But, most people have dismissed it with a wave of their hand and then carried on with their very busy lives.

What we ALL really need to do is to learn how to get still once again. We need to embrace the silence that is within us.  For it is there that we will receive great wisdom. Look at it as a sanctuary for our busy selves…a time when we can just “be” without having to impress anyone else. And, it’s very, very important that we discover this sacredness again.

It truly is an inside job. A training of sorts where the payoff won’t be in lining the pockets of those who are already “fat” from profits, but rather, a return to the riches of our own soul.

That, my friends, is priceless.

What’s Being Concealed From Us? And What Is The Right Thing To Do?

Cowardice asks the question – Is it safe?
Expediency asks the question – Is it politic?
Vanity asks the question – Is is popular?
But Conscience asks the question – Is it Right?
And, there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; but one must take it BECAUSE it is right.”

…Martin Luther King

There is a story about an elephant who, at 6,000 lbs. just stood there with a small chain wrapped around his ankle. What was so strange about this spectacle was that this creature made no attempt to break free from the small stake he was tied to. Something he could have easily done. This was a very puzzling thing indeed.

As it turns out, when this beautiful, magnificent elephant was a mere 200 lbs. he was chained to that very same stake. Every day. You see, he was conditioned to believe day after day, in his young years that he could not break free from his bonds and so, as an adult he never tried.

How many of us have avoided trying something new because of a conditioned thought? Worse still, how many of us have not taken a stand because of someone’s else’s limited beliefs?

How hard is it to become free and healed when there is a chance that it might not be safe, nor politic, nor popular?

This is where we are today. We have felt powerless for so long that we are at the risk of not realizing that we are the powerful now. We are at the risk of staying enslaved forever. Is this what we truly want for ourselves and humanity?

Well, here’s something we can do now. A baby step if you will…but an intensely powerful and potent elephant baby step…So simple, yet important and influential enough to change the direction of our future.

I came across a person by the name of Ty Bollinger some time ago. He is on a mission to eradicate cancer by teaching the world all the best methods to prevent, treat, heal from, and beat the disease…

…And to expose Big Pharma who profits BIG TIME by concealing the truth and feeding the public lies that cause millions unnecessary suffering (and their very lives).

Well, a short while ago, Ty released an uplifting and mesmerizing 9-part documentary series on “The Truth About Cancer: A Global Quest.” I was both captivated and held spellbound by the amount of unbelievably credible information that was delivered in this documentary.  I couldn’t wait each day for the next part in the series. It was THAT good!

I am happy to share with you today an incredible opportunity!

Beginning April 12, they are going to re-release “The Truth About Cancer: A Global Quest” 9-part documentary series for a limited time (for free).

Do yourself a favor and click on the link or copy and paste the link to watch for free “The Truth About Cancer: A Global Quest” video series that starts April 12th.

I have nothing to gain by doing this. I just feel very strongly about the truth of this film series as I lost a sister to breast cancer.

You see, I am beginning to listen to my inner voice, to heed my intuition in matters of the heart. My conscience tells me that this is the right thing to do.

Fear. What Is It Good For? Absolutely Nothing.

change-717488_640“A miracle is a shift in perception from fear to love.”

…Marianne Williamson

Easy to say. Not so easy to do.

Especially since we’ve been weened on fear since birth. It’s been part of our conditioning. A part of our limited thinking.

You know, things that were said to us as we were growing up like “Money doesn’t grow on trees you know” or, “You wait until your father gets home.” This limiting fear belief is unconscious and so it is difficult to recognize. And, you seldom question it because you are not even aware that it is a belief.

And, since fear keeps us forever revving our motor…constantly thinking about how fast we can solve this problem, or the warp-speed with which we can finish up that task, there is never any time for us to slow down or get out of the rat race.

This, of course ultimately takes its toll on us. In ways we haven’t been able to imagine until recently. Things like depression and mental health issues that have reached epidemic levels.

But, here’s something to ponder. “If you look underneath your depression, you’ll find anger. Look under your anger, and you’ll find sadness. And under sadness is the root of it all, what’s really masquerading all the while…fear.”

Well, this changes everything! And, I sense that there’s a part of ourselves that is longing to be born and it requires only our nourishing attention.

If we begin to understand that our emotions (like fear) create our body chemistry, then we can change how we feel, we won’t need drugs to keep us going, and best of all, we won’t be depressed.

So, we now have a new way to think. Look at it this way: We are no longer a machine made up of a body being pushed around by a brain, at the mercy of an electrical charge that keeps our hearts beating and our nerve impulses crackling.

No. We can now see ourselves as an intelligent system, one that involves a massive synchronized exchange of information between mind and body. Our cells are literally talking to each other, and our brain is in on the conversation!

As I said earlier….This changes everything! It means our true identity is very connected to our feelings and our emotions. This not only gives us a new self-concept but a new sense of integrity as well.

For, as we begin to realize that our body has wisdom, this calls for a new kind of responsibility on our part. We can no longer act like a dumb machine and wait to be fixed by a mechanic (also known as a doctor). Now we must consciously take an active role in our own healing.

We no longer need to go around promoting how happy we are when we don’t really feel that way. No longer do we need to keep our feelings hidden, for fear others will be indifferent to our sorrows or anger.

It is this problem of bruised and broken emotions that most of us stagger under without ever saying a word. NOT. ANYMORE.

Here’s why.

Feelings represent a tremendous amount of concentrated information. And the clearer and stronger the feelings, the more knowledge of the Universe it contains.

In the end, it is our feelings that are able to scan all the information from our outside environment. It is through feelings, not through our mind or intellect that we are able to perceive the truth.

Think of it as a reset for the mind and the body. This is the new thinking that is required to help move us into the “new normal” we are now living in. How cool is that?!!
